LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas City Council will consider zoning changes on Wednesday for a major development project on the site of the Desert Pines Golf Club along Interstate 11 in the east valley.
The mixed-use development includes plans for affordable housing, “market rate” housing, park space, commercial space, a community center and a job training center, according to previously released information.
The City of Las Vegas owns the land, and the golf course will continue to operate there until development requires it to close. The 100-acre property is bounded by Bonanza Road on the north, I-11/U.S. 95 on the south, Pecos Road on the east and Mojave Road on the west.

The city’s website indicates that a mixed-use development on the site with more than 1,800 housing units would use less water than the golf course.
In November, the state announced a $25 million loan to support the project. It’s the largest affordable housing project in state history, and it has gained momentum because of the housing crunch in the Las Vegas valley.
McCormack Baron Salazar, a Missouri-based developer, is behind the project. The project cost is estimated at $450 million. It will be built in phases.
On Wednesday, Las Vegas has a public hearing scheduled. The city is expected to advance the project by rezoning the property to traditional development. The city is also likely to vacate a public right-of-way along Mojave Road, where a bicycle path runs next to the road.

A development agreement between the city and Desert Pines Master Development, LLC, is also on the agenda.
City staff has recommended approval of the entire Land Use Entitlement project, according to the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting.
