LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A student at Cimarron Memorial High School was arrested Friday morning after a gun was discovered.
A letter from the school’s principal, Colin McNuaght, said that police responded to the school after administrators received a report of a possible weapon on campus.
The school was placed in lockdown during the police search, in which a firearm was confiscated and a student was arrested. The principal said there were no threats made to the school or students.

8 News Now spoke with parents following the lockdown on Friday afternoon.
“People should be coming in here with clear backpacks. Why is Las Vegas one of the only places that doesn’t have clear backpacks for these school grounds? Tamara Kray, a concerned parent, said on Friday. “Students need to come to school with clear backpacks or no backpacks at all,”

Some parents said they believe more focus on prevention is necessary.
“This is one of the better schools in CCSD. What’s going on at other places? The Clark County School District board trustees need to wake up and stop playing these games,” parent Mark Hoke told 8 News Now. “You have got to solve the problem, and it’s through prevention.”

Parents also added that they believe there is a need for more security in the form of metal detectors and backpack checkpoints at schools.
“The school should have metal detectors and be checking these kids’ backpacks. I know it is an inconvenience and a cost, but it needs to be done,” Hoke added.
Parents can contact the school’s main office with questions or concerns.
