SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (WFLA)— Two men were rescued on Saturday by the Coast Guard after their boat ran out of fuel and capsized south of Desecheo Island.
Coast Guard Sector San Juan watchstanders got an unregistered digital selective calling alert around 1 p.m. and a call from a good Samaritan who reported a disabled vessel off Desecheo Island.
According to the Coast Guard, the two men were located aboard their disabled boat by Air Station Borinquen Coast Guard Auxilary airplane aircrew.

The Air Station Borinquen MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter arrived on the scene and found both men wearing their lifejackets on their vessel around 5 p.m.
According to the Coast Guard, around 5 minutes after the two were located, the boat capsized from a wave in 6-8 foot seas and 25-30 knot winds.
“Our crews worked together to rescue safely and efficiently with the best possible outcome,” said Lt. David Tirado Tolosa, Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen MH-60 aircraft commander. “Emergencies at seas can happen at any given moment. We recommend all mariners wear their life jackets and carry a marine grade radio as these men did, in case they encounter an unexpected situation at sea.”
Aircrew safely hoisted both men from the water where they were transported to the Air Station Borinquen.
