Brazilian electricity sector: similarities with organized crime
The Brazilian electricity sector delivrers almost a hundred billion USD per year considering generation, transmission and distribution.
* More than 10% is power theft
Carefully called “non-technical losses”.
* Power plants that would not withstand competition
Are contracted without ceremony – “crony projects”.
These two cost “endorsements” alone are gigantic,in USD Billions per year. And to make matters worse, this is something that has been going on consistently for decades.
And there is a solid “official” protection to maintain and even encourage this situation that favors a caste that is embedded in the three constituted powers.
And the worst part: the cost is passed on to all consumers and there is still no realistic expectation of change!
