LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Four people are missing and two were transported to the hospital after an early morning fire raced through a home in a south valley neighborhood Thursday.
Fire crews received the call shortly after 4 a.m., and several units were sent to battle the blaze at a home on Langhorne Creek Street, in a neighborhood near Jones Boulevard and Windmill Lane. When crews arrived, they reported flames were coming from all the windows on the second and third floors.
“It’s just horrible,” Clark County Fire Chief John Steinbeck said. “They went in aggressively to try to attack the fire. They were driven out by heat immediately on the second floor and moved down to the first floor to conduct search operations and the building began to collapse on top of them and they had to reverse back out.”
He said a woman and child were injured when they jumped from a third-floor window. Both were transported to University Medical Center where Steinbeck said they were able to answer some questions about the fire.
Steinbeck said there was conflicting information on how many people were in the home but it’s believed four, including two children, are missing.
Witnesses told 8 News Now a family with children lives in the home. Neighbors said they awoke to the sounds of a booming noise, breaking glass, and pops that sounded similar to gunshots.
Steinbeck said when the home began to collapse and fire crews retreated, firefighters focused on fighting the blaze from outside and protecting nearby homes. A neighboring home did have some windows broken by the heat.
The home is considered a “dangerous structure,” Steinbeck said because all the upper floors collapsed. Before a search can continue, he said the home must be shored up structurally. Crews are expected to be on the scene for the next 24 hours.
Crews did put out the fire seven minutes after arriving. There is no information available on the cause or origin of the fire.
