LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Two young men are accused of killing a father driving on a freeway near the Las Vegas Strip in what police believe was a case of road rage, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.
Damarion Bell, 18; and Jasahn Lovette, 23, are both accused in the murder of Darin Algee, 31. On Aug. 8, Algee was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 15 with his girlfriend and their child between Spring Mountain and Flamingo roads, documents said. Algee died from several gunshot wounds.
As part of the investigation, police learned a FedEx employee was driving in the area at the time of the homicide. Police obtained video from the truck, which showed the shooting was the result of road rage, they said.
The video showed Algee’s car and a white SUV passing each other before the shooting. The vehicle was later determined to be a Jeep. Officers then searched for all registered owners of the suspected SUV’s model and year.
Police then located the suspect vehicle, finding it was stolen in July. Two weeks after the murder, police recovered the SUV, which was parked at the North Las Vegas Police Department. Video surveillance showed two people parking the car and wiping it down with a towel.
Officers then reviewed more video, linking the incident to Bell and Lovette, they said.
On Oct. 18, police arrested Lovette and a third person, Markell Smith, in a stolen car, police said. Markell, who was driving, crashed the car during a pursuit.
While arresting Lovette, officers were alerted to the warrant for his arrest for Algee’s murder, documents said.
Records show police arrested Bell on Oct. 1, though his arrest was not made public until Lovette was in custody. Bell faces charges including open murder and several charges of attempted murder. He remained in custody without bail as of Tuesday and was due in court on Oct. 24.
Lovette also faces charges including open murder and attempted murder. He remained in custody without bail as of Tuesday and was due in court on Oct. 24.
Smith faces several gun-related charges and was ordered held on $100,000 bail. He was due to return to court on Nov. 5.
