LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Tropicana, or “Trop” as it’s sometimes referred to is nearing its final hour after 67 years on the Vegas Strip.
It will cease to exist come Wednesday around 2:30 a.m. when an implosion show starts with 555 drones dancing in the skies above the iconic hotel, 150 Pyrodrones shooting sparks, and fireworks before nearly 2,200 pounds of explosives bring both towers crumbling down.
There will be no public viewing areas so getting the best viewing will be by watching it on KLAS-TV, channel 8, which is dedicating numerous camera crews for live coverage of the event from different angles. “Drop the Trop” will begin airing at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Oct.9. You can also watch that coverage via a live stream on 8NewsNow.com at that time or later in the day if you missed it.
The implosion will end an era that began decades before corporations took over most of the Strip’s renowned hotel properties including the Dunes, Sands, Desert Inn, Aladdin, and Stardust which are now just memories after they were turned to dust and debris to make room for new, bigger properties in the 1990s and beyond.
While it may be a bittersweet goodbye for those who have fond memories of the Tropicana, the buildings may be gone, but the memories will live on.
