LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — DUI is suspected in a crash that left a man dead in the south Las Vegas valley on Saturday.
Around midnight on Aug. 17, officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Department received a report of a crash on south Las Vegas Boulevard at the intersection of east Pyle Avenue.
Police reported evidence at the scene showed that a Nissan Rogue was traveling northbound in the right lane on Las Vegas Boulevard while a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound in the left turn lane. As both drivers approached Pyle Avenue, the Jeep driver failed to yield, crossing the Nissan’s path and colliding with its right side, police said.
Both drivers were taken to a nearby hospital. Officials said the Nissan driver, who had life-threatening injuries, was pronounced dead at the hospital: the Jeep driver, Walter Quijano, 48, sustained minor injuries.
Quijano showed signs of impairment, police said, and was arrested on suspicion of DUI resulting in death. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, according to LVMPD.
Records show Quijano is scheduled for his initial court appearance on Aug. 18 at 9 a.m.
The death represents the 93rd traffic-related death in the LVMPD’s jurisdiction for 2024.
