Our global emissions plans are failing on every level and a disruptive plan is needed now. Among our biggest failures are with multi-family housing, low income housing, and with manufactuers of constructing materials. “Emisions from industries such as iron and steel, cement, concrete, aluminum, chemicals, food and beverages, pulp and paper account for about a third of U.S. carbon emissions!”.
Multi family and low income housing has been an area of little to no sustainability progress because the owners of these housing types have never been motivated or incentizived to reduce energy demand or emissions. After discussion with efficiency associates, I believe we can make huge progress in energy demand and emission reductions with multi family, low incone housing and manufacturing of construction material simultaneously!
Recently in the US six billion dollars was designated to reduce emssions by manufactuers of construction materials. Some of these funds should be dedicated to emission offsets. This would allow manufactuers of construction materials to create a dedicated funds to reduce emissions in their countries in multi family and low income housing! “Net Zero occurs when an entity reduces emissions following science-based pathways, with any remaining GHG emissions attributable to that actor being fully neutralised by like-for-like removals”. These manufactuers would get the emission reduction credits but could recapture and reuse this funding by keeping energy use savings until the cost of each project was recouperated! By utilizing energy demand reduction projects, and we have several identified, the milti family and low income efficiency projects would have a ten year or less payback! The added bonus would be that all this housing would enjoy energy savings for at least twenty years with far greater comfort for housing residents! There is testing that proves that this could be achived accross all North America climates!
As a planet we have been going about sustainability planning badly. We have here an excellant way to prove We can “Reduce Before We Produce” to benefit many. Energy demand reduction should be the first major committment and with good planning energy demand reduction can self fund!
