We may be on the cusp of ability to bore “deep enough, cheap enough” to profitably harvest and deliver energy from deep hot dry rock geothermal (DHDRG) sources directly beneath major demand and load, almost anywhere on Earth. Humanity’s total demand for electricity, hydrogen, and hot water for DHCS would be met via a proliferation of autonomous micro- and mini-grids, loosely interconnected at distribution voltage and via hot water pipes, for resilience and redundancy. Grid transmission and storage roles are reduced; storage is free; leave heat in the ground until needed. Thus, let’s now increase RD&D investment — from private, public, and philanthropy — in DHDRG tech and systems maturation and in proliferation of profitable DHDRG harvesting plants.
