First transatlantic commercial flight fueled with 100% SAF!
Today (November 28), Virgin Atlantic flew one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners across the Atlantic Ocean on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The plane used 60 metric tons of SAF — a combination of 88 percent hydro processed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) fuel and 12 percent synthetic aromatic kerosene. The flight is the first commercial airline to fly a passenger plane across the Atlantic with fossil-free jet fuel. According to this revealing story, by Canary Media Inc.‘s Maria Gallucci, SAF can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from flying by over 70 percent when compared to fossil jet fuel. Globally, air travel accounts for about 2 percent of annual energy-related CO2 emissions. If you are curious to how large a 787 Dreamliner is, the maximum design take-off weight ranges between 502,500 – 561,500 lbs (227,930 – 254,692 kg) . . . that’s more than 250 tons at takeoff!
