When complete in 2025, the Biscay Gulf interconnection will nearly double the electricity transfer capability between France and Spain.
In mid-June, Hitachi Energy announced it won an order from Interconexión Eléctrica Francia-España (Inelfe), the joint venture of the Spanish (Red Eléctrica) and French (Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE) electricity transmission networks, to supply four high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations to interconnect France and Spain via a subsea cable across the Biscay Gulf. The Biscay Gulf interconnection will supply a total of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 400 kilovolts (kV) over 400 kilometers (km). When complete in 2025, the transfer capability between the two countries will reach 5,000 megawatts.
