A woman is dead after she was shot by two Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies. The department had asked people to stay away from the scene for hours before the shooting occurred.
The shooting happened at the Weigel’s gas station on on Callahan Drive and Central Avenue Pike near Powell, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies went to the gas station around 4:40 p.m. Dec. 23 on a report of a “possible suicidal” woman, according to a KCSO press release. The woman was killed hours later, just before 11 p.m., “for reasons still under investigation,” the release says. Two deputies fired their guns.

Prior to the shooting, KCSO had asked community members to avoid the gas station “to safely resolve the situation and ensure the individual receives appropriate care and support,” according to a press release.
As is routine in local police shootings, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will investigate.
