We’re never truly that far removed from the Texas frontier days. One of the Lone Star State’s most storied ranches is officially up for grabs in the Hill Country – and it could all be yours for a tidy $1.5 million.
Locally believed to have once imprisoned Apache war legend, Geronimo, the New Fountain Stagecoach Stop in Hondo was once a crucial stomping ground for frontier travelers moving between San Antonio and El Paso in the late 1800s, according to Hood Real Estate Inc, the firm representing the property.

What’s a”stagecoach stop,” you ask? In the 19th century Texas was lined with the travel outposts. This particular location, opened in 1868 by Captain Frederick Metzer and his wife, Louise, was a place where those travelling by stagecoach (in the “horse-and-buggy-days,” as real estate agent Jeffrey C. Hood pointed out to MySA), could stop for food, drink and rest in the hotel portion of the building before heading to the next stop.
Today, the property holds a two-story Western-style home sitting on 2,900 square feet with access to the big city and live water year-round. The home is ready to be transformed into the Texas-style ranch of your dreams. The interior was razed by its sellers to give potential new owners a chance to start from scratch with a “blank canvas” and a new vision.
