A “large portion of asphalt” became “dislodged” from a vehicle driving south on Durango and entered the northbound lanes, hitting the Honda.
The asphalt piece went through the windshield of the vehicle and hit a 6-year-old boy sitting in the back seat.
Medical personnel took the child to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, which police also described as life-threatening injuries. He remained in critical condition on Monday afternoon.
The driver of the Honda was not impaired, police said. Another passenger, a 4-year-old boy, sustained no injuries.
Police asked that drivers avoid the area as this is an ongoing investigation. As of 8 a.m., the RTC of Southern Nevada said Durango Drive was closed in both directions at Peace Way and urged drivers to use other routes.
