The race to commercial fusion energy is no longer 20 years in the future, and fusion propulsion may get us to Mars 50% faster. Announcements from commercial fusion developers like Canada’s General Fusion, America’s Commonwealth Fusion Systems, TAE Technologies, and Helion Energy, plus three ongoing projects in China suggest commercial fusion power is no more than a decade away. Fusion power on Earth will likely be joined by fusion propulsion in space with design concepts from the UK, the US, Russia and China.
