Recently there have been two fascinating developments in the electricity production industry – both evolving from hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technology that fueled the boom in US shale oil production. First, Houston-based startup Fervo Energy announced progress on their first geothermal commercial system in Utah at Cape Station – a 400MW power plant, with permitting to expand to 2GW. The first 100MW are expected online next year. Fervo was named 2025 Global Clean-Tech North American Company of the year. Second, in early January, California-based nuclear startup Deep Fission and Endeavour Energy LLC announced their commitment to co-develop 2GW of nuclear energy. Electricity from Deep Fission’s mile-deep reactors will power Endeavour’s expanding portfolio of data centers. The first reactors are expected to be operational in 2029.
These announcements mark an exciting time for zero-carbon electricity utilizing oil and gas drilling technology. Kudos to Fervo Energy’s Tim Latimer and team, and Kudos to Deep Fission’s Elizabeth Muller and team, for developing these cutting-edge technologies using modern day drilling techniques.
