A new “level” for net metering
The Energy Compensation System, also known as Net Metering, allows consumers (for example those who have rooftop solar) to obtain credits (in kWh) for any surpluses injected into the grid of the concessionaire, which are discounted from subsequent invoices.
The local concessionaire installs a digital meter that identifies energy in both directions: consumption from the grid (“imports”) and energy “exported” to it.
These meters also store the volumes exported or imported by time interval. Currently, for a residential consumer – for example – export credits are calculated based on the regulated tariffs, practiced by the local concessionaire.
My suggestion, to better reflect the operational reality of the electrical system, would be to replace the regulated tariff with the hourly spot (published by the clearinghouse CCEE) for exports.
This would be a leap in quality, which would benefit everyone because it reflects the reality, just as it is!
