ReconAfrica has achieved a major milestone in its exploration efforts in Namibia with the successful drilling of the Naingopo exploration well on Petroleum Exploration License 73 (PEL 73). Located in the Damara Fold Belt in northeast Namibia, the well started drilling in July 7, 2024, and has reached a depth of about 4,184 meters, exceeding initial expectations. This well is key to unlocking the area’s resource potential, which includes an estimated 181 million barrels of oil and 937 billion cubic feet (BCF) of natural gas.
The Naingopo well is the first in a series of planned wells aimed at evaluating the hydrocarbon potential of the region. ReconAfrica’s President and CEO, Brian Reinsborough, emphasized the opportunity this project brings to explore new energy resources in Namibia. Drilling is expected to take about 90 days, and success here could open the doors to additional prospects and leads already mapped in the area.
Following drilling, the team will conduct wireline logging, coring, and modular dynamics testing (MDT) to collect vital geological data. Early results from these evaluations are anticipated in the coming weeks, providing insight into the viability of the resources.

This project carries significant economic potential for Namibia. If the exploration succeeds, it could attract more investment into the country’s oil and gas sector, positioning Namibia as an emerging energy hub. The discovery of major reserves could lead to job creation, infrastructure growth, and increased foreign investment, boosting the nation’s economy.
Namibia’s push to responsibly develop its natural resources aligns with global energy trends, reducing reliance on imports and improving energy security. The government has actively encouraged investment in the sector as part of its broader economic strategy.
ReconAfrica’s collaboration with NAMCOR, Namibia’s state-owned oil company, highlights the importance of partnerships between international firms and national entities. This approach ensures knowledge-sharing and prioritizes local interests in resource development.

Environmental stewardship is a critical part of the project. ReconAfrica has pledged to adopt best practices to minimize environmental impact and to engage with local communities to address concerns throughout the process.
Naingopo exploration well represents a pivotal moment for Namibia’s energy sector. If successful, this initiative could bring significant economic benefits while enhancing energy security and solidifying Namibia’s position in the global energy market. The next few weeks, as evaluation results come in, will be crucial in determining the project’s outcomes and its potential impact on the country’s future.
