Energy: in Brazil what are our priorities?
Perhaps the most appropriate title for this post would be: what should our priorities be.
Objectively, what we need to do is focus on the basics. Outline a strategy to substantially reduce the “spurious” costs that permeate – in depth – the electricity sector.
Eliminating power theft, ending crazy subsidies, implementing a massive demand response program, replacing instant showers with storage ones scheduled for off-peak hours – among others SHOULD be the focus of the electricity sector.
They would have the capacity to substantially reduce costs, benefiting the population, companies and institutions that consume energy and suppliers. The country would be way more competitive and of course attract more investments.
But this is not the tradition of the electricity sector, which prioritizes cronyism. Not efficiency.
It is high time for a change. Starting with our leaders, who should be “measured” by improving the efficiency of the electricity sector. We lack courage, determination and even honesty of purpose to make happen what is essentially simple, perfectly identified and viable with our good, local, proven engineering.
