This according to the latest edition of the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s ‘Today in Energy’. Plant developers are expected to add 62.8 gigawatts (GW) of new electric capacity this year – up 55% from 2023. Solar (37-GW), battery storage (15-GW), and wind (7.1-GW) account for more than 94% of the total, while new natural gas (2.6-GW) and nuclear (1.1-GW) power plants round out the rest. According to the report, generating capacity retirements are expected at about 7.6-GW – mostly from the closure of aging natural gas and coal-fired power plants.
