The Fit-for-55 package outlines a series of important targets related to energy consumption, concerning industry, aviation, maritime and road transportation.
But how many of them encompass H2? And which types? Here is an overview of how the types of hydrogen are mirrored in the legislative package with a few takeaways:
➡ RFNBO hydrogen is clearly prioritised, with a number of multipliers put in place to increase its attractiveness to investors
➡ Bio-based hydrogen is also included in 5.5% REDIII transport targets, with no other policy measures explicitly targeting its supply
➡ Other types of hydrogen are not contemplated in any specific targets – with the only exception of lowcarbon and non-fossil H2 under ReFuelEU Aviation
➡ By-product hydrogen use is exempted from having to be replaced by RFNBOs if used in industrial applications
