Given China’s dominance, the progress India is making in developing clean energy may often get overlooked. Not only is India becoming a leading manufacturer of solar panels, it is also one of the top countries in the world in terms of solar installations.
JMK Research’s latest report pegs India’s 2023 solar installations at 9.5 gigawatts (GW). That brings the country’s total installed base to over 60 GW, good for the fifth most installed solar capacity in the world.
A catalyst for India’s solar growth has been the expansion of its PV manufacturing sector. From March of 2022 to March of 2023 India doubled its PV module output from 18 GW to 36 GW. The current a pipeline is in the neighborhood of 110 GW. Although Chinese PV manufacturers hold the top three spots in worldwide shipments, in 2023 India held six of the top 10 spots.
India is fifth in the world in installed solar capacity, but what does the top 10 look like?
(Based on World Population Review data on 2022 capacity)
- China (of course)
- United States
- Japan
- Germany
- India (will likely soon overtake Germany)
- Australia
- Italy
- Brazil
- Netherlands
- South Korea
Note: If the EU were treated as a single entity, it would be second.
