World Economic Forum | Clean Hydrogen Initiative
WEF are promoting the energy transition and the move to clean hydrogen, they remind us that;
Hydrogen and its derivatives will account for 12% of global final energy demand in 2050 with an estimated two thirds coming from green hydrogen and one third coming from blue hydrogen (the exact carbon abatement potential will depend on the green and blue hydrogen mix)
94Mt hydrogen production
Today, global hydrogen production is 94Mt. This generates emissions of around 900Mt CO2, double that of the UK. The vast majority of this is “grey” hydrogen (made with fossil fuels and no carbon capture) and used by the refining and chemicals industries.
200Mt needed
To achieve net-zero, estimates suggest we need 200Mt of clean hydrogen by 2030. This requires a two fold scale up of production and a shift to away from grey hydrogen.
