The climate and geographic location are ideally suited for solar, and as a consequence, Australia has been a leader in rooftop solar deployment. Proof of their leadership position is illustrated by the latest milestone achieved in the state of South Australia.
On Saturday September 23 at 13:55 pm rooftop solar peaked at 101% of demand. Renewables actually accounted for 114% of the state’s demand. Most of the surplus was exported or used to charge storage. Some of the energy was curtailed (wasted) due to negative prices. Yes – sometimes clean power is thrown away for various reasons including price.
South Australia is a model for clean energy production. The region shut down its last coal plant in 2016 and with battery storage rapidly expanding, no longer uses gas facilities in “baseload” mode. The region does still run two gas-fired plants at low capacity to maintain grid security.
Congratulations to South Australia for achieving what most of the rest of the world is still striving to achieve.
