Is solar energy competitive?
Solar energy is (already) massively present in the Brazilian energy matrix. And with a tendency to further increase its penetration!
A “powerful” argument used in favor of solar is its competitiveness.
When looking systemically, for each solar system installed, the public grid (generation, transmission and distribution) needs to invest in similar capacity, to serve the customer at night and when there is no insolation, even during the day.
In other words the total investment required is much higher with solar. While the solar system is the customer who pays, the public grid’s “backup” “everyone” pays.
And in the same token, all of us pay for the so-called “duck curve”, which was identified abroad and here in Brazil as well.
Is solar really competitive? Are we interested in knowing the truth?
