It’s a banner day decades in the making for clean, safe, firm nuclear power in the United States! Today, Georgia Power Company announced that Plant Vogtle Unit 3—the first newly constructed nuclear unit in the United States in over 30 years which, along with Plant Vogtle Unit 4, was financed by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) loan guarantees via LPO—has safely reached the start of commercial operations! Vogtle Unit 3 can power an estimated 500,000 homes and businesses, while Vogtle Unit 4 is in the final stages of construction and testing and is projected to enter service in late 2023 or early 2024. Together, these units mark the first deployments of the AP1000 Generation III+ reactor, which features advanced safety systems. The project supported 9,000 onsite construction jobs during its peak and 800 operations jobs, and the workers trained onsite at Vogtle are poised to be the foundation for small modular reactor (SMR) deployments as well as other next-generation domestic nuclear energy projects going forward. Clean, firm power—the kind that nuclear energy supplies—will provide a crucial backbone of reliability as the U.S. works towards national clean energy deployment and emissions reduction goals, so today’s announcement is a major milestone for the sector and country. As LPO Director Jigar Shah has said, “We need a variety of tools to provide the next generation electricity grid, to meet the needs of electric vehicles and heat pumps—and all the growth that’s coming—and we think nuclear is an essential part of that.”
