In Washington, the Environmental Working Group has released a new blog alleging corn produced for ethanol is responsible for increased amounts of toxic water pollution due to runoff of fertilizers and manures into waterways. It brings together articles about blue green algae blooms in Iowa’s lakes to an ongoing lawsuit between Des Moines Water Works and upstream counties for increased costs to clean nitrates out of water. The utility says it used its filtration system for 74 days in 2013 at a cost of $1 million and 177 days in 2015 at a cost of $1.5 million.
