In Japan, Japan Airlines has teamed with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to develop waste-based aviation jet fuel that will use hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce the fuel. The new plant to be sited outside Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture should be online in time for the airline to use the fuel in 2020 when Tokyo will host the Olympic Games. Already All Nippon Airways has begun work on algae-based aviation fuel with Euglena at a $24 million demo plant in Yokohama.
