A great government agency is a little like a river pilot — doesn’t run the ship, but steps in as a vital partner for complex, critical tasks where specialized know-how and resources are required, above and beyond the call of “business as usual”. In many ways, it sums up the US Department of Agriculture.
A full description of the USDA’s efforts on the bioeconomy would likely entail describing the entire Department of Agriculture. Here, Valerie Reed (recently seconded to USDA’s Office of the Chief Scientist from the Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office) does a valiant job of summarizing the programs, projects, players and goals.
